| | The Tongariro Crossing is a 17 kilometre (10 mile) tramp across the volcanic plateau of the central North Island of New Zealand. Highlights included crossing the floor of an old crater, beautiful "Emerald Lakes" which acquired their turquoise colour from volcanic minerals, and grand views of the surrounding countryside. All in all, a splendid one-day family hike.
