Travers-Sabine Tramp

Nelson Lakes National Park
South Island
New Zealand
December 2000

This was a six day tramp covering 80 kilometers (50 miles). The tramp starts at Lake Rotoiti near the village of St. Arnaud. The route goes up the beautiful Travers River Valley, skirts around Mt. Travers, and then crosses the range at a low saddle (1800 m) on the flanks of Mt. Travers. The track then leads down the Sabine River valley until reaching Lake Rotorua. At this point one can choose to cross back over the range via Angelus Hut (difficult), return to Lake Rotoiti via the Speargrass Track, or follow the shoreline of Lake Rotorua to the road end. I opted for the latter, as I was too exhausted for either of the other two options !
